 Aeronautica Imperialis Introduction:

Aeronautica Imperialis consists of two tabletop miniature wargames set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. These games showcase aerial combat between different factions, offering standalone battles or integration into larger narrative campaigns. The inaugural edition, launched in January 2007 by Forge World, a branch of Games Workshop, was followed by a second edition in August 2019, introduced by Games Workshop itself. This second edition featured altered rules and larger models.

The revamped Aeronautica Imperialis under the Games Workshop umbrella emerged in August 2019, offering starter sets that include two opposing force squadrons (initially Imperium vs. Orks, later supplemented by Imperium vs. T'au), a basic rulebook, a game mat, and various tokens. Additional aircraft options are available, with most in plastic from Games Workshop, complemented by a few specialized resin models from Forge World. Supplementary materials are centered around fictional in-universe campaigns, featuring rules to expand the game with more aircraft and a mission set for recreating pivotal conflicts within the narrative.

Gameplay:

Gameplay occurs on a hexagonal cell mat, eliminating the need for tape measures. Players take turns moving models and engaging in combat, simulating the real-time dynamics of dogfights. Tactical choices involve selecting aircraft speed and altitude, concealed maneuver selections to confound opponents, achieving the advantageous 'tailing' position (allowing additional rounds of shooting when in an enemy's rear arc), and managing spins and stalls.

In contrast to the rigid cell-based gameplay, Aeronautica Imperialis originally offered a more free-form approach akin to the Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game. Models were not restricted to cells, allowing for dynamic changes in speed, altitude, and maneuvering. The Aeronautica Imperialis rulebook encompasses not only game mechanics but also includes maneuver cards, background information on individual aircraft, colorful illustrations, and painting suggestions. At the conclusion of the rulebook, a "campaign" section presents scenarios for players to reenact within the game.
